Preview :  Inter Miami vs Montreal

Despite possessing Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Casemiro and Rodrigo De Paul, Inter Miami have struggled for consistency. They enter this game after winning only one of their previous five matches, with their most recent result being a 2–1 home defeat against Toronto. The club have appointed Cristian “Kily” González as their new manager, although interim coach Guillermo Hoyos remains in charge until the required work permits are completed. Hoyos will miss this match after receiving a one-game MLS suspension, adding another complication during an unsettled period.

Messi remains Miami’s greatest attacking threat, while Suárez and Germán Berterame can occupy defenders and create additional space around the penalty area. Montréal will probably defend compactly and attempt to exploit Miami’s vulnerability when possession is lost. Prince Owusu is their primary goalscoring danger, having recorded 13 goals entering the fixture. Montréal have drawn three of their last five listed matches and recorded a notable 2–1 away victory over Columbus Crew. Miami won the previous meeting between the teams 1–0 on 26 July.

Miami should enjoy more possession, but their recent defensive performances mean Montréal cannot be dismissed. The visitors have enough attacking ability to score, particularly if Miami become impatient and leave space behind their midfield. Nevertheless, Messi and Miami’s other experienced attackers should receive opportunities against a Montréal defence that has struggled throughout the season.

Match Prediction

Inter Miami 2–1 CF Montréal

Montréal can make the contest uncomfortable and may find the net, but Miami’s superior attacking quality should help them escape their difficult run with a narrow home victory.

About Major League Soccer:

History

Major League Soccer is the leading professional men’s football competition in the United States and Canada. The league is divided into Eastern and Western Conferences, with clubs competing during the regular season for qualification to the MLS Cup Playoffs. Rather than crowning the champion exclusively through the league table, the postseason knockout competition determines the MLS Cup winner. The Supporters’ Shield is awarded separately to the team with the best regular-season record.

The competition follows a double round-robin format running from August to May each season. A total of 20 teams contest 38 matches each—playing every opponent once at home and once away. Clubs earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 for a loss. Unlike many American sports leagues, there is no playoff system to decide the champion; the club accumulated at the top of the table at the end of the 38-game campaign wins the title. At the bottom end, high stakes are maintained through promotion and relegation: the bottom three teams are dropped to the EFL Championship, while three clubs from the lower division earn promotion to take their place.

European qualification adds another layer of intense competition to the standings. The top four or five teams typically earn entry into the prestigious UEFA Champions League, while positions directly below secure spots in the Europa League and Conference League based on domestic performance and cup results. Domestically, historic clubs like Manchester United (13 titles), Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool have historically dominated the competition. However, the league remains renowned for its unpredictability, high tempo, physical intensity, and iconic underdog stories—most famously captured by Leicester City's miraculous 5,000-to-1 title-winning season in 2015–16.
